Shhh... Tonight's Secret Spots in the PST Zone
Looking for a little mystery with your mezcal? A touch of history with your highball? If you're in the Pacific Standard Time zone tonight, you're in luck. The West Coast is dotted with hidden gems that transport you back to the roaring twenties. From secret doors behind bookcases to underground lairs, these speakeasy bars are open tonight and ready to serve up craft cocktails in a clandestine atmosphere.
Here are some of our favorite secret spots to visit tonight in major PST cities. Remember, part of the fun is finding them!
Seattle: Needle and Thread
Located inside the popular Tavern Law in Capitol Hill, Needle and Thread is an intimate, reservation-only speakeasy that feels like a true step back in time. To get in, you'll need to pick up the old rotary phone by the bank vault door upstairs at Tavern Law and hope there's space. Once inside, you'll find no menu—just a bartender ready to craft a custom cocktail based on your preferences in a beautifully appointed, dimly lit room.
Portland: Multnomah Whiskey Library
While not a traditional "hidden" speakeasy, the Multnomah Whiskey Library is an exclusive, members-focused lounge that evokes the same feeling of a secret society. Housed in a magnificent space downtown, this is a sanctuary for the spirit lover. Imagine floor-to-ceiling shelves holding over 1,500 bottles of spirits, accessed by rolling library ladders, all in a quiet, leather-clad room with a roaring fireplace. It's the ultimate sophisticated night out.
San Francisco: Bourbon & Branch
Bourbon & Branch is perhaps San Francisco's most legendary speakeasy. Operating in the same location since 1867, it was an actual illegal speakeasy during Prohibition. Today, it maintains that history with a series of hidden rooms, including the main bar accessed through a secret library door (pictured below), and the even more exclusive "Wilson & Wilson" bar-within-a-bar. You'll need a password to get in, so be sure to make a reservation on their website.
Los Angeles: No Vacancy
Housed in the restored Janes House, the last remaining Victorian residence on Hollywood Boulevard, No Vacancy offers one of the most dramatic entrances of any bar in LA. We won't spoil the surprise entirely, but your journey into this lively, dimly lit courtyard bar begins in a bedroom (like the one pictured below). Once you find your way through the secret passage, you'll be greeted by live music, burlesque performances, and excellent cocktails under the stars.
San Diego: Noble Experiment
Hidden inside the Neighborhood restaurant in San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter, Noble Experiment is a classic speakeasy hidden in plain sight. Look for the wall of stacked beer kegs near the restrooms, and give the secret door a push. Inside, you'll find a small, dark, and intimate bar with a gothic-chic vibe, complete with brass skulls on the wall. It's the perfect spot for a quiet, high-quality cocktail away from the Gaslamp's noisy crowds.
