Gone but not forgotten - Distilleries that filed for bankruptcy this year


Several distilleries and related spirits brands have filed for bankruptcy in 2024 and 2025, driven by factors such as overcapacity from a previous boom, shifting consumer preferences toward canned cocktails, high inflation, and supply chain issues



Here are the distilleries that filed for bankruptcy or entered receivership in 2024–2025:


2025 Bankruptcy Filings (Chapter 11) 

  • Westward Whiskey (House Spirits Distillery LLC): Filed for Chapter 11 in April 2025.

  • Luca Mariano Distillery (and parent company LMD Holdings): Filed for Chapter 11 in November 2025.

  • Stoli Group (USA) LLC & Kentucky Owl, LLC:Filed for Chapter 11 in November 2024 (reported in 2025 context).

  • Boston Harbor Distillery: Filed for Chapter 11 in March 2025.

  • Devils River Distillery LLC: Filed for Chapter 11 in May 2025.

  • JJ Pfister Distilling Co.: Filed for Chapter 11 in May 2025 after closing operations.

  • Dented Brick Distillery: Filed for Chapter 11 in July 2025.

  • The Alton Distillery (SVG 26 LLC): Filed for Chapter 11 in September 2025.

  • 52 Eighty Distilling: Filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy.

  • Bluegrass Barrel Co., Heritage Reserve Distillers, and Boone Hollow Spirits: Three Kentucky distilleries that filed for Chapter 11 between July 31 and August 4, 2025.

  • A.M. Scott Distillery: Filed in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Southern District of Ohio. 


Other Closures or Receiverships (2024–2025) 

  • Lee Spirits Co. Inc.: Filed for Chapter 11 and ceased operations in March 2024.

  • Garrard County Distilling Company: Entered bankruptcy/receivership proceedings in 2025.

  • Montana Distillery: Closed in April 2025.

  • McCallum & Sons Whisky Co.: Liquidating inventory and closing permanently in April 2025. 

Industry Trends

  • Overcapacity: There is a significant surplus of aging bourbon, particularly in Kentucky.

  • Reduced Sales: Sales of American whiskey declined in 2024.

  • Workforce Reductions: Some major producers have announced significant workforce cuts in 2025.
